WhereWasIt: Lost Item FinderPrivacy Policy

Privacy Policy — WhereWasIt

Effective date: October 6, 2026

This Privacy Policy explains how WhereWasIt (“WhereWasIt”, the “App”, “we”, “us” or “our”), developed and published by Osman Dogan, handles your information. WhereWasIt is private by design: your things, spot photos, pins and notes stay on your device. There is no account, no advertising, no analytics and no WhereWasIt server that stores your inventory.

1. The Short Version

We do not collect, store, sell or share your personal data. Everything you add to WhereWasIt is saved only on your device. We cannot see it and we do not send it anywhere. The only third party involved is Apple, which processes in-app purchases and, if you enable them, device backups, under Apple’s own privacy policy.

2. Information Stored on Your Device

To work, the App stores the following locally in its private storage on your device:

  • Things you add: the position of the pin on its spot photo, your hint (for example “behind the shoebox”), whether it is marked secret, when you last confirmed it is still there, its memory-check schedule and results, and names, categories, tags, notes, optional prices and purchase details, favorites, loan details (such as the name you enter for a borrower and a return date) and history of moves.
  • Spots you create: rooms, wardrobes, drawers, boxes and other places, how they are nested, the optional photo of each spot, and where a spot is pinned on its parent photo.
  • Photos and attachments you choose: the original photo, a background-removed cutout, a thumbnail and any receipt or attachment images you add.
  • App settings: appearance, default view, currency, motion and haptics preferences, and a local record of whether WhereWasIt Pro is unlocked.

This data is not transmitted to us and is not accessible to other apps, except as described in the Backups and Exports sections below.

3. Camera and Photos

If you choose to take a photo, WhereWasIt asks for camera permission. The camera is also used, with the same permission, to scan WhereWasIt QR labels. When you choose an existing photo, you pick it with the system photo picker; the App receives only the photos you select. Background removal and optional object classification are performed entirely on your device using Apple’s Vision framework. Photos are never uploaded to us or to any image-processing service.

4. QR Labels

QR labels created by WhereWasIt contain only a random identifier for a place. They do not contain your item list or any personal information. A label only opens its place on the device that holds that place.

5. Information We Do Not Collect

WhereWasIt does not require an account, sign-in, email address, phone number or name. It does not collect your location, contacts, health data, advertising identifiers or device identifiers. It does not include advertising, analytics, crash-reporting or tracking SDKs, and it does not track you across other apps or websites.

4a. Secret Spots, Face ID and Passcode

You can mark things or spots as secret. Secret content is blurred in the App, in search and in Siri answers until you unlock it. Unlocking uses Apple’s LocalAuthentication framework (Face ID, Touch ID or your device passcode). The App only receives a yes/no result from iOS; it never receives, stores or transmits your face data, fingerprint or passcode. Secrets lock again when the App goes to the background.

4b. Siri and Shortcuts

If you ask Siri or run the “Find a thing” shortcut, the App looks up the thing in the data stored on your device and returns the spot as an answer. Speech recognition is handled by Apple under Apple’s privacy policy; we receive nothing. Things in secret spots are never read out.

4c. Spot Cards and the Sample Home

A spot card is an image the App creates on your device when you choose to share where something is. It leaves your device only through the share sheet, to the destination you pick. The optional sample home contains bundled example photos and is stored locally like your own data; you can remove it in Settings.

6. Notifications

If you set a reminder for a lent item, or turn on memory check reminders, WhereWasIt asks for permission to send local notifications. These are scheduled and delivered by your device’s operating system and do not pass through any server operated by us. Memory check reminders never include the names of your things. You can turn reminders off in the App or notifications off at any time in iOS Settings.

7. In-App Purchases (WhereWasIt Pro)

WhereWasIt Pro is a one-time purchase processed by Apple through the App Store. Apple handles payment, billing information and receipts. We do not receive your payment card details, billing address or Apple Account credentials. To confirm and restore your purchase, the App uses Apple’s StoreKit framework, subject to Apple’s privacy policy.

8. Device Backups

If you use iCloud Backup or a computer backup, WhereWasIt data may be included along with your other app data according to your device settings and Apple’s privacy policy. We do not have access to your backups.

9. Exports

You can export your inventory as JSON or CSV (metadata and locations only). With Pro, you can also create an export that includes your original photos, cutouts, thumbnails and attachments. Exports are created only when you choose to, and you decide where they go using the system share sheet. Once shared, a file is handled according to the practices of the destination you chose. Exports may contain everything you entered, so treat them as personal files.

10. Data Sharing and Third Parties

We do not sell, rent, trade or share your personal data with anyone. The only third party that receives any information in connection with WhereWasIt is Apple, for App Store distribution, in-app purchases, local notifications and device backups as described above. Apple’s privacy policy is available at https://www.apple.com/legal/privacy/.

11. Data Retention and Deletion

Your data lives only on your device, so you control how long it is kept. You can delete items, places and attachments within the App at any time. Deleting the App removes all WhereWasIt data stored by the App on that device. Copies in device backups or exports you created must be deleted separately. We have no copy of your data and cannot delete or recover it for you.

12. Security

Your data is protected by your device’s security features, including the App’s sandboxed storage and device encryption when a passcode is set. Because no data is transmitted to us, there is no server-side data for us to protect. We recommend keeping your device updated and protected with a passcode.

13. Children’s Privacy

WhereWasIt is not directed to children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your jurisdiction) and does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone.

14. Your Privacy Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights under laws such as the GDPR/UK GDPR, the CCPA/CPRA or the Turkish Personal Data Protection Law (KVKK). Because WhereWasIt does not collect or process your personal data on our systems, we hold no personal data about you to which these rights could be applied. You can access, correct, export and delete your data directly in the App. We do not sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.

15. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be reflected by an updated effective date. If a future version ever introduced data collection, we would update this Policy first and, where required by law, ask for your consent.
